Behind the keywords "Enterprise 2.0", "Social Collaboration" and "Digital Workplace" lies a certain idea of the workplace of the future. In this case Enterprise 2.0 means the development of companies under the aspects of options for action in the companies that have proven to be added value and still make use of the techniques, methods and processes of Web 2.0 and the Social Web. Enterprise 2.0 represents the development of the company to a new model of co-operation, management, leadership and value creation. Here, knowledge and the free exchange of information is a key requirement, therefore, a necessary condition of a Social Collaboration.

The realignment or the evolutionary step of the company refers not primarily to a technically oriented selection of software for the purpose of labor or technically driven redesign of platforms for corporate communication. The necessary transformation of the entire company, for example, in matters of internal interaction and communication opportunities, primarily means a change in corporate culture with the goal of establishing a genuine participation of employees as the basis of work and business value.

From Social Collaboration …

Social Collaboration therefore refers specifically to the method of cooperation in the company through appropriate technical tools and digital platforms.  Here it is clearly in the foreground, that those people work together who collaboratively solve problems together, create products or jointly provide services. Through a social collaboration, it is quite possible to put "the world division" from Blue Collar and White Collar aside again, because a collaboration beyond functional boundaries can easily take place again. This expressly is included in the topics collaboration in the cloud in the future.

… to the Digital Workplace

The integration of all technical applications in the workplace, and finally the various implementation options within the team workplaces are the basis of the configuration of the digital jobs. By emphasizing the company-wide collaboration and communication capabilities a Digital Workplace is also far beyond a computerized workplace. Each area of work and each part of the value creation is part of a Digital Workplace. It is so far about the penetration of the processes and support of actions as well as enabling communication with the aid of technology. But the technology is intended to "only" enable, that collaborative work is possible along the processes and within the individual communities or working groups. This has the consequence that the adequate use of tools and platforms is determined independently, ideally by those affected.

How to recognize a Digital Workplace

The digital workplace of the future thus has specific requirements that must be met. Accordingly, one can recognize a Digital Workplace on the following four criteria:

  • Social Collaboration has established itself as a course of action and method of collaboration across the enterprise.
  • The Digital Workplace shows up as infrastructure and access to the different communities, tools and Spaces. It is individualized (by jobholders) and not standardized across the company!
  • Information is a key resource or free access to data its equipment element. The free access manifests itself through a hierarchy-unbound communication.
  • Stark characteristics are diverse interfaces as well as a strong network management. Various communities and a direct task execution identify the networking.
